Vacation at 34 weeks?

A quick question for those of you who have some experience in this, are we crazy for booking a beach vacation in August when I'll be 34 weeks? (i.e. in my 35th week)

I realize I'll be hot and huge, but the condo has AC and there's a pool and, of course, the ocean. It's about a 5 hour drive from our house.

And, we're prepared to just eat the cost if for some reason babygirl comes early. (We're getting travel insurance for the hurricane possibility but there are exclusions for pregnancy (except for a few 'complications of pregnancy' situations)).

All that having been said, are we crazy? Will I just be miserable? Of course, my thought is, would I rather be miserable sitting around my AC'd house without a pool and without the ocean or miserable sitting around the AC'd condo looking at the ocean and occasionally waddling down to the pool?

Oh, and we're very excited that we found a pet friendly place. A belated 1st birthday present for the pup! I'm sure she's going to *love* the beach.

(Oh, and don't think that it didn't go through my mind before, during and after writing this that I'm *actually* planning to still be pregnant at 34 weeks. Crazy.)

  1. hmmmmmm..this one is tricky. I'd ask your doctor if I was you. Only because if you've lost your mucous plug or anything like that they arent gonna let you get in the pool anyway...so that will suck.

Also third trimester rules often include no superlong car rides. and i think 5 hours quaifies as super long. Ask your doctor. you can always take a babymoon. When you go on vacation after you have the baby.

  2. I think it sounds wonderful. I would just go. The only thing is if you go into labor while you are THERE. You'd have to be prepared to deliver there. Which should be fine, considering you often don't get your own OB when the time comes anyways.

But I'd make sure you have the hospital and insurance details sussed out beforehand!

  3. I don't know - this is tough! I have no personal experience, so I'll be following along to hear other's thoughts. I agree with Lesley - make sure to figure out the hospital situation - just in case.

  4. Over Easter we went to visit family which is a 5-6 hour drive away, and OMG was I swollen after the drive. It took almost 4 days of laying with pillows under my feet and ice on my ankles to get it back down. Mind you we didn't stop and get out and walk every 2 hours which you really should when travelling and pregnant. But I was uncomfortable sleeping, and just not a huge fan of being out of my environment. (I was 31 weeks that weekend)
If you do go, make sure you stop and walk every 2 hours, drink tons of water and take ice packs just in case the swelling sets in. Also pack your favorite food items, yogurt, protien bars, etc..

  5. MMhh I wouldn't. I remember how optimistic I was about how I would feel at around that time...I was wrong!

Also, I just nominated you for an award on my blog!

  6. I would recommend going for one earlier if you can. I went for one at 22 weeks (we were flying on a plane though) and it was a lot more tiring than I thought it would be even that early on. I can not imagine going on one at 34 weeks. And if you do, I definitely agree to find out about the hospitals close by just in case. I would also talk to your dr about it to see what they think. Also, if you are going to a warm weather place, just be ready to drink a lot of extra water to keep yourself hydrated!
