Getting the questions out

I'm already thinking about the questions I want to ask Dr. Dry at our appointment a week from next Wednesday. I'm hoping I won't spend all of our vacation next week thinking about them. So I decided to get them out here and maybe kind of 'put them away' for a while until we return the next week and head to that appointment. In the meantime, of course if you've got any opinions or experiences to lend to these questions, I'd surely appreciate them!

1) should I get another HSG or something to make sure there isn't scarring from the D&C? (and for that matter, from the 1st D&C last September since my only HSG was done just a week or so before that) Will it matter? I mean, what will happen if they do find scarring?

2) If we fool around with my own eggs for a while (doing IUIs or IVF or whatever) do we risk promoting the reappearance of my endometriosis? And will I end up back in the same place we were pre-lap, i.e. with enough endo (stage III, but mostly because of many small endometriomas) to cause implantation problems (although nobody actually knows for sure that endo causes that)? Will that mean we have implantation problems with donor eggs too?

3) Is it just foolish to spend our money on my sister's 36-year old eggs? Since no matter how generous she's being, I can't imagine asking her to do more than one cycle, we presumably won't have any 'tweaking' opportunities. Or can they predict somehow ahead of time how she'll respond to stimulation? FSH level? Although mine was hovering around 9/10 for the last year, they never told me I'd be a poor responder. Does that even correlate?

4) What are our real odds of getting unlucky again? Sure, if no translocation I understand that we're back to same odds as before for my age - 1 in 50. But that's an average, right? It may be that my eggs are just crappier than the average 40-year-old's. So, what are our real odds of having a chromosome problem again?

I'm very sure I won't get much of an answer to any of these questions. This whole profession seems to operate on "we don't know" and "we don't know why" statements. But I'm going to ask anyhow.

So, I'm off for a week or so. I may be reading, but won't be posting. I need to take a break and not think about IF for 10 days.

Good luck to all of you gearing up for a cycle, doing the 2ww, waiting out a pregnancy or just trying to figure out what to do next!! Hope all goes well.

  1. Have a good vacation! Try to have fun and not think about all your questions...but that's like telling you not to think at all :)

Hopefully your dr will be able to answer some of your questions and guide you in the right direction.

  3. These are great questions. Have you been tested for immunology issues? I know it was chromosomal stuff with the last baby, but endo tends to run with immunological issues. Especially if you use your sister's eggs, and it can only be one cycle or so, you want to make sure you have as hospitable of an environment as possible!

    Have a fabulous vacation!

  4. Enjoy Aptos- it will be lovely.

I hope you get some answers that are satisfying on some level. It is so tough that no one really does know.

  5. Enjoy your vacation -- it's a lovely part of the country and should be great.

Those are all great questions, and I'm hoping that the answers you get help guide you in your next steps. There are so many unknowns and judgment calls. that having some direction really helps!

  6. Good luck with your appt. Just some thoughts....my RE did a saline sono after the D&E to check that all was ok, since that is way less painful, I wonder if that is an option. I have endo as well (very mild though) and had a lap in oct. I was told that the pregnancy was good for the endo and that I was unlikely to have any growth of endo during those months.
I hope this helps. please let me know if I am giving you too much unsolicted info, I take direction well and can just shut up.
I hope you get to enjoy yourself on vaca, it is more than needed.

  8. If you are going to try IVF with your own eggs again I would seriously speak to your RE about doing CGH testing, it is better than PDG as it test for more chromosomes... Definitely a good idea to have another HSG considering you've had a D&C recently.

I hope you have a wonderful vacation! Rest and relax you deserve it and I'm sure need it! All my very best!

  9. Have a great vacation! It was wise of you to get things out before you leave!

Oh...and *if* they find scarring, there are plenty of ways that they can remove the scarring.

  10. Enjoy your holidays my friend. I have only one comment on your first question (because i went through the same). And HSG won't tell you anything a part from the fact that your tubes are open and there is no reason to think any different. if you are concerned about scarring you should probably have a hysteroscopy done. I don't think this has a real chance of being true though, and some doctors actually think that a D&C makes a better environment for the embryo to nestle in. i did have scarring and it was simply removed during the hysteroscopy. i had my FET 6 weeks later.
    Thinking of you loads, Fran
